This download covers Unit 6: Weeks 18 – 21 and is aligned with the Common Core Writing Standards.

Weeks 18 and 19 contain lessons about writing a friendly letter. Students will look at the format of a friendly letter. Using the type of organizer that students are familiar with, they plan and write a friendly letter to their grandmother, aunt, or other relative that they would like to visit. These lessons will also focus on elaboration.
When writers suggest an idea, the author must stop and tell more about it. Details are the key to all great writing.

Weeks 20 and 21 are where Narrative instruction begins. Time will be spent comparing expository and narrative writing so that students will begin to understand the difference. Beginning writers have difficulty with the concept of a time line. They tend to remain stationary in time in their story unless you are at their side saying, “Then what happened? and “Then what happened?” Most young writers are very familiar with narrative writing because parents, grandparents, and babysitters have been reading them stories for years. They know that a story has a point (plot), characters, and setting. They may not know the terms but they sense that these elements are always in a story. When they write, first graders often have these same elements in their writing. Young writers like to write about something that happened to them (plot). They include their friends (characters) and places that are familiar to them (setting). Narrative is not difficult to teach. Students’ ideas and what they know will guide you. Most students love telling a story verbally and this section of the writing year will help them to learn how to put a story on paper.
