This first grade common core writing curriculum includes everything you will need to teach your daily writing lessons. I have included step-by-step instructions, all templates, reference sheets, and writing samples within this unit.
This download covers Unit 1: Weeks 1 – 4 and is aligned with the Common Core Writing Standards.
Week 1 is the beginning of a year of terrific writing. Students are inundated with reading assessments, math assessments, and a number of evaluations at the beginning of the year. So we start our year off relaxing and enjoying the world of writing. Let them start the year off by writing in their journals. The lessons in this unit will have your students setting up a vocabulary book full of ideas and words that will help them with their writing throughout the year. They will also work on the ideas section of the book setting up an information resource that provides ideas for journal writing. If the time is spent on carefully learning how to generate writing topics early in the year, the need for you as a total resource for writing topics will diminish. This is also the time to put a halt to the famous writing question that interrupts every class period… “How do you spell….?” The vocabulary book will be a resource for not only ideas but also for the correct spelling of words that will make their writing flow.
Week 2 is the first week of developmental writing instruction. The key word is ‘motivation’. The lessons this week are designed around an enjoyable and motivating activity with food. In order to motivate beginning writers to use print, I begin all important lessons in writing with food. Food is the one device that attacks every avenue of input on a child. They gather information through their eyes, ears, nose, fingers, and mouth. The senses will work together to reinforce the writing experiences.
Week 3 will have students creating their “I Am Special” books. Everyone writes better when they write about ideas and situations with which they have familiarity. First graders will be writing about themselves and their families this week. The lessons will help you to see if they know important information such as their address and telephone number. After they have completed the book about themselves, recommend that students share their ideas and information with a friend or family. It is a great project to have on their desks during a Parent Night.
Week 4 of this unit will provide students with pictures and objects to use in their writing. Concrete materials that students can touch, see, and describe improve the details in their writing. These materials also give students ideas about which to write. Involving music, art, and an assortment of visual and hands-on experiences will not only cause students to be more interested in the subject, but will stimulate a higher-level of information in their writing.
Each week in this unit includes:
1. An overview of the weeks plan and objective
2. Five writing lessons
3. A spelling activity
4. A grammar or conventions activity
5. All templates needed for the weeks writing activities
6. Instruction or reference sheets covering various topics
